England women on Sunday fell to Spain 0-1 at the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup co-hosted by New Zealand and Australia.
The Lionesses of England, succumbed to La Roja, their Spain counterparts at the final game of the competition played at the Sydney Stadium Australia.
Spain’s captain Olga Carmona opened the scoring with a pulsating finishing in the 29th minute. The two sides battled vigorously with Mary Earps of England stopping a penalty by Spain’s Hermoso in the 71st minute after Walsh handled the ball in the box. But the thin scoreline held in the end
Interestingly, the last time the two sides met at the European Championship in 2022, England beat Spain 2-1 in extra time of the Quarter finals and went on to lift the trophy.
Before today’s encounter, England have qualified for the FIFA Women’s World Cup six times, reaching the quarter-finals in 1995, 2007 and 2011, finishing third in 2015, fourth in 2019 and reaching the final for the first time in this tournament.
Spain on the other hand, had never even won a knockout match at the World Cup until this edition.
Sweden’s women’s team, the Blågult on Saturday in Brisbane, beat the Mathildas of Australia 2-0, to win the Bronze medal.
